Double Dutch Or Nothing

My partner and I have lived as expats in the Netherlands for quite a long time. Despite speaking some Dutch, we both prefer to use English whenever possible. Our neighbours are Dutch and moved in a few years after we bought the house. Then they had a girl, and from the moment she started to talk, she took great pleasure in greeting us whenever she was in the garden and heard us walking by on the other side of the fence in our garden. Of course, being still young and knowing no English, she only said, “Hello [My Name], hello [My Partner’s Name]” and nothing more.

One day, as I was coming back from work and had just parked my bike in the shed, I heard her play in the garden with who I assumed was a friend. Of course, as soon as she heard me, she shouted:

Neighbour’s Daughter: “Hello [My Name]!”

Me: “Hello there!”

I then heard her saying to her friend, in Dutch:

Neighbour’s Daughter: “You know, [My Name] and [My Name’s Partner] are not Dutch and they speak only English.”

She then said to me, again in Dutch:

Neighbour’s Daughter: “[My Name], isn’t it true that you don’t speak Dutch?”

To which I replied, again in Dutch:

Me: “Yes, that’s true.”

While she was telling her friend:

Neighbour’s Daughter: “See, told you.”

I could hear her friend’s brain cogs grinding to a halt, while I tried to hide my laughter.
