The Difference Is Hare-Raising

(Our family is out for dinner at a nice restaurant and everyone’s looking through the menu. One of the specials is saddle of hare.)

Mom: “I think I’ll have that special, the saddle of rabbit.”

Me: “…you mean, the saddle of hare?”

(My mom rolls her eyes at me.)

Mom: “Sure, whatever, the hare. The male or the female, what does that even matter.”

(I actually started laughing because I thought it was a joke, but as it turns out it wasn’t. We had to explain to my 47-year-old mother that a hare and a rabbit are two different animals and NOT just the male and female of the same animal. She’s never going to live this one down.)
