Digging A Hole, In Español, Part 2

| Related | May 2, 2015

(I publish a popular fan fic online, and after getting lots of support from my fans I am currently looking into self-publishing an original anthology collection. I noticed that the minimum selling price to qualify for a certain royalty rate is usually less than $5.00, but in Mexico was $34.99. Surprised, I spoke to my mom about this.)

Mom: “Well, pesos are really devalued compared to the US dollar.”

Me: “I know, but I’m wondering how much that really is… Like, is that still seen as a lot even there?”

Mom: “Try looking up the value of a loaf of bread.”

Me: “Okay…”

Mom: *musing* “Will people in Mexico even buy your book?”

Me: “I don’t know. I know I have at least one native-Spanish-speaking fan, though I don’t know if she’s from Mexico or Spain…”

Mom: “No, I mean, can people in Mexico even read?”

Me: “Wait, what?”

Mom: “I mean, how’s the literacy rate there? Is it full of illiterate people?”

Me: *dumbfounded* “…It’s Mexico.”

Mom: “I know, but how many people can read?”

Me: “…It’s Mexico.”

Mom: “Yes, but I don’t know about the school system there… It might be different…”

Me: “Mom, it’s not a developing country. It’s Mexico.”

Mom: “Sure, but there are rural areas there. They may not have schools in those areas.”

Me: “Mom… It’s MEXICO.”

(The funny thing is, I know for a fact she went on vacation there at least once, so she should know it’s not just a bunch of tiny villages in the middle of no where with no schools and people wearing sombreros.)
