Dealing With A Specific Member Of Class

| Learning | June 21, 2015

(I am teaching mostly seniors (one class of freshmen) this year, after teaching all freshmen last year. One thing my students often did was draw inappropriate body parts on their whiteboards during class. Over the summer, I spray-painted the backs of the boards black to prevent this from happening anymore. This is the first time I’m passing out whiteboards this school year, to one of my senior classes. The student in question is male, a football player, and a pretty big guy.)

Student: *snickering and showing his board to others around him*

Me: *seeing what’s on the board* “Yeah, as I’ve mentioned, I taught freshmen last year.”

Student: “It’s permanent marker, Miss.”

Me: “Color over it with dry erase marker and erase it. It should come off.”

Student: “It’s not mine!” *I assume he was referring to the board*

Me: “Well, I HOPE it’s not yours!”

(It took a solid few minutes to get the attention of the class again after that.)
