Deaf To Reason, Part 18
I am not entirely deaf, but I do use hearing aids. It is enough that when I work the checkout I have a sign up asking customers to please note that I have hearing difficulties and might need to ask them to repeat some questions.
Two customers are checking out and one of them reads the sign.
Customer: *To her friend.* “Oh, great! We got a r*tard working here. Why do we always get in the lane with the specials?”
Me: “Excuse me, I would appreciate not being called any of those terms.”
Customer: *Shocked.* “You can hear me?! This sign says you’re deaf!”
Me: “No, it says I have hearing difficulties. And also…” *I point to my hearing aid.*
Customer: “You should turn off your hearing aid when customers are talking!”
Me: “Trust me, right now I’m very tempted.”
I finished checking them out in silence. I did notice that they purchased a few single items that were part of a “buy one get one free” sale at the time but I guess I forgot to mention it.
