Crazy Grumpy Love
My boyfriend has invited me to join him at a work event. Normally, I tend to avoid those as his work is a little dull, but the event includes food cooked by a relatively well-known chef, and he’s trying to make a good impression on a new manager, so I agree to go.
At the event itself, I am shocked by my boyfriend’s transformation. Usually, he’s quite reserved and introverted with me, but this man before me is the loud, brash heart of the party! He’s cracking jokes, smiling non-stop, and saying all of the right things.
At the end of the night, we’re in a taxi home, and I have to bring it up.
Me: “Who were you tonight?!”
Boyfriend: “What do you mean?”
I bring up all the observations I mentioned earlier.
Boyfriend: “Oh, yeah. I’m like that at work.”
Me: “But… why aren’t you like that with me?”
Boyfriend: “Because I like you. I simply work with them.”
Me: “It’s just… such a transformation.”
Boyfriend: “Yes, because it’s fake. Would you rather I faked that behavior with you?”
Me: “Not at all. I want the man I first met.”
Boyfriend: “And that’s what you’re getting. I promise that you’re getting my true, miserable, grumpy, authentic self.”
Me: “Well… I do like it when we can be grumpy weekend hermits together.”
Boyfriend: “Exactly. Now let’s get home and hate-watch The Great British Baking Show together and complain about how nice they all are to each other.”
He may be grumpy, but he’s MY grumpy.
