Close Enough To Closing

(We close at 10:00 pm, and we make announcements every five minutes for the half hour before closing. At 10:00 pm exactly, half the lights in the store go off. I’m walking with a coworker to start cleaning the bathrooms when we pass two women still shopping.)

Coworker: “Oh, I’m sorry. You two should head up to the front to complete your purchases; we’re closed now and the registers shut off automatically at five or ten after, so you won’t be able to.”

Customer: *looking at her phone* “Well, is it five or ten after? It’s 10:03 right now; we still have time.”

(We both just sort of stared at them and reiterated that we were closed and they should leave. We were kind of dumbfounded that they felt they could still shop, get all the way to the front of the store — no easy feat even without merchandise — and still complete a transaction in either two or seven minutes. Closed means closed!)
