Classicist Misunderstanding

(I’m a lesbian but have not yet come out to my mother. I am writing a paper on Classics for history club. Interestingly, the girl I have a crush on, also a lesbian, is a Classicist too. My sisters both know this.)

Me: “I might leave history club.”

Mum: “Why?”

Me: “Well, I was going to write my paper on homosexuality in Ancient Greece, but Ciara said that she wanted to do that and the teachers said it was inappropriate.”

Mum: *thoughtfully* “Oh, Ciara. Is she the other one?”

(My sisters splutter and one of them chokes on her food.)

Me: *very calmly* “The other classicist? Yes, she is.”

(My sisters and I laugh about it later.)
