(A friend is describing the climax of a film. I forget which one.)

Friend: “So, this man’s been handcuffed to a car door, which they’ve set up to explode. But he has a saw with him. He can try and cut through the chain but it’s hardened steel and he might not have time. But he will probably have time to cut off his hand. What would you do in those circumstances?”

Me: *immediately responds* “Cut through the car door.”

Friend: *babbles for a few moments* “But… you might not have time.”

Me: “If you can cut through your wrist, you have time to cut through the frame above the window. It’s only a couple of centimetres.”

Friend: “Er…”
