Children Of The Corn Aisle, Part 3
A customer’s young son, maybe two or three, is helping her unload items from her cart (that he’s sitting in). He places some carrots on the belt.
Son: “Vegebals. Yuck.”
Me: “Aww, don’t be like that. Some vegetables are nice.”
Customer: “That’s right, you like some vegetables, right [Son’s Name]?”
Son: “Yuck.”
Customer: *To me.* “I promise, I feed him veggies. He even has a few favorites!”
Me: “Haha, I believe you! I know it can be tough to get some kids to eat their greens.”
I scan a few more items, and he passes me another vegetable.
Me: “Your mommy said you have some favorite vegetables! Can you tell me what they are?”
Son: *Thinks long and hard.* “Ham!”
Mom and I both laugh.
Me: “Haha, no, ham isn’t a vegetable.”
Customer: “It’s the yellow one, remember?”
Son: *Thinks longer and harder.* “Cheese?”
We both laugh again. The answer was corn, by the way.
