Checkout Calling, Part 3

, , , , | Right | March 7, 2026

My checkout customer is, like so many others, glued to their phone when they should be focusing on, y’know… checking out.

So, I go to my usual strategy when this happens (as long as there isn’t a long line), and I just stand there and stare at them in silence until they realize I’m not scanning anything or touching the register.

When they finally click on and lower their phone:

Customer: “Why aren’t you scanning my items?”

Me: “Your call seemed really important, and I didn’t want to disturb you.”

I start scanning once they actually acknowledge my existence as their cashier. This one at least had the decency to look a little embarrassed about it and put their phone away.
