Cause For Pregnant Pause, Part 23

I work as a tour guide, giving tours of an Amish house. I’m explaining how most Amish births take place at home with Amish midwives instead of going to the hospital.

Me: “So some Amish midwives are actually licensed nurse practitioners.”

One of the women in the tour group raises her hand to ask a question.

Tourist: “How long does an Amish woman’s pregnancy last?”

I’m stunned into silence for a moment. I think the look on my face speaks volumes, as one of the other tourists on the tour saves me by speaking up:

Other Tourist: “A true Amish will do it the old-fashioned way, with the stork!”

This gets the group laughing, breaking me out of my shock and making the other tourist a little embarrassed. After the tour I explained to her that Amish were indeed still human and their pregnancies were the same as any other. Her question stemmed from some odd belief that Amish are “different from the rest of us” because they’re “allergic to wifi and stuff”.
