Cancel The Cancelling Of The Cancellation

| Romantic | December 31, 2015

(I live an hour away from my boyfriend. However, every Sunday my work takes me to his city and ends at 12:30 pm, so I go to his place after work and spend the rest of the day with him. This is the only date night we get on an average week. He’s also a grad student so sometimes he goes into work after hours and does his school work there.)

Me: “So what are we doing this Sunday?”

Boyfriend: “Oh, uh, I’ve got this big assignment due first thing next week and an exam is coming up…”

Me: *disappointed* “Oh, so cancel this Sunday?”

Boyfriend: “Yeah… it’s probably better.”

Me: “Okay. All right.”

Boyfriend: “Oh, but we can have a quick lunch!”

Me: *happy* “Okay!”

Boyfriend: “But it has to be quick. One hour, two, maximum.”

Me: “That’s okay! I’ll get to see you!”

Boyfriend: “Okay. I’m sorry I can’t spend longer with you. I really need to get this done.”

Me: “It’s okay. My exams are coming up soon, anyway.”

(We have our lunch and it’s now the next weekend.)

Me: “What do you want to do this Sunday?”

Boyfriend: “Oh, uh, I have to cancel again.”

Me: *disappointed* “Again?”

Boyfriend: “Yeah, work’s been piling up.”

Me: “Oh. Okay. So not even a short lunch this time?”

Boyfriend: “Yeah… there’s so much work and not enough time. I’ve already gotten an extension on this assignment so I have to get this done.”

Me: “Okay… Well, how about I come over after work and make you food? You could just work and we could eat together and I’ll go home right after.”

Boyfriend: “That… sounds really nice. And it could work. I’ll have to think about it. I might not even be home this Sunday. I might go into work and do my work there.”

Me: *disappointed* “Oh. Okay.”

Boyfriend: “I’ll let you know later what I decide to do.”

(Later that evening.)

Boyfriend: “Hey! Turns out, I need to be in [Mall near my work] this Sunday, anyway!”

Me: *hopeful* “Oh, okay! So I could see you after work?”

Boyfriend: “Well, it ends at 3 pm.”

Me: “That’s okay! I’ll stick around the library and study for my exam while I wait for you!”

Boyfriend: “Are you sure?”

Me: “Yeah! I want to see you.”

Boyfriend: “Okay. Thank you for being so understanding.”

Me: “It’s okay! I’ve got exams coming up, too.”

(We have some tea after his appointment and now it’s the weekend after that.)

Boyfriend: “I keep buying food at work. I need to make a lot of food during the weekend and eat off of that during the week or something.”

Me: “Oh, we could do that! We’ll cook and have dinner together this Sunday!”

Boyfriend: “Yeah… but can we do that not this Sunday? I’ve got a lot of work piled up again.”

Me: *disappointed* “Again? Are you cancelling this Sunday?”

Boyfriend: “Yeah, this semester is just… crazy. I’m really sorry. But I’ll have time again soon when this class is done.”

Me: “Okay.”

Boyfriend: “But we can have a short lunch!”

Me: *laughs* “Okay, do you realize that you’ve cancelled our date three times in a row?”

Boyfriend: “Yeah… I’m so sorry…”

Me: *still laughing* “And do you realize that you’ve cancelled the cancel three times in a row?”

Boyfriend: “I know! I know! Thank you for being so patient with me.”

Me: *laughing harder* “How could I not be? You’ve never actually cancelled a date with me!”
