The store is heaving because of a seasonal sale. My manager and I are walking toward the front to support the cashiers. As we’re walking down the line, a teenage girl who has just stepped in line stops us as we pass.
She speaks with that typical “valley girl” inflection:
Customer: “Ugh, the line is huge, and this thing is not expensive at all. Can you, like, give it to me for free?”
My manager, who is an old-school middle-aged man, turns to this girl and matches her inflection perfectly:
Manager: “Can, ain’t gonna…”
And then he continued to power walk toward the front, me in tow, stifling a giggle.
