Bigots Always Slur Their Words

, , | Right | December 27, 2021

It is 2010. I’m sitting in a call centre and I overhear a coworker being yelled at. My coworker can’t get a word in. I don’t hear everything, but I do hear my coworker being called a foreign [very nasty word] and being told that all foreign people should go back to their countries. Her parents are from Turkey, but she herself was born and raised here. Then, the caller hangs up.

Me: “What was the deal with her?”

Coworker #1: “I have no idea. She started shouting after she heard my name. I’ll just make a note in her file; that’s pretty much all I can do.”

The phone rings with another coworker. We hear shouting again and look up. [Coworker #2] puts the phone on speaker. The caller just assumed a nationality.

Caller: “I want to know the name of that [racist slur] and I demand she be fired! They should ship her in a crate to f****** Morocco. And all those other Moroccan [slur]s. I am surrounded by all those [slur]s; what will you do about it?”

Coworker #2: “Me? Well, this Dutch [slur] will hereby terminate the connection. Have a nice day.”

[Coworker #2] was worried she’d be in trouble, but our manager just lost it when he reviewed her call. With tears in his eyes, from laughing, he just asked her to refrain from using that word again.

The woman herself could not be refused service due to a binding contract, but she was the reason a zero-tolerance-for-verbal-aggression-policy was implemented. The company had never needed one before that point.
