Big Mother Is Watching
Customer: “My son is underage, and you sold him totally inappropriate items!”
Me: “I’m sorry, ma’am. What did we sell him? Would you like a refund?”
Customer: “Refund? I want compensation! I want the name of the person who sold it to him! I want to call the police!”
Me: “Well, let’s just figure out what happened first, shall we? When did this happen, and what was sold to him?”
Customer: “Yesterday! And you sold him an iPad!”
Here I was thinking it was a rated-M videogame or something…
Me: “Uh… what made the iPad an inappropriate purchase?”
Customer: “It was hundreds of dollars!”
Me: “Did he pay in cash?”
Customer: “Yes! He’s been saving his gardening money.”
Me: “So, your teenage son came into the store with his own money and purchased an iPad, which isn’t an age-restricted item?”
Customer: “It is age-restricted! It costs hundreds of dollars!”
Me: “It’s price doesn’t make it age-restricted, ma’am.”
Customer: “There are laws!”
Me: “Not about this, ma’am.”
Customer: “Ugh! You sound just like my lawyer!”
Me: “Well, your lawyer is correct.”
Customer: *Walking away* “My son should not be able to just buy what he wants without my permission! This country has become so socialist!”
Once she’s gone, another customer near me chimes in.
Other Customer: “Isn’t what she’s complaining about actually capitalism?”
Me: “Honestly, that’s not even the dumbest thing I’ve heard this week…”
