(I have just recently passed my driving test. My dad is unusually eager to help me get my own car.)

Mum: “Why is it taking so long?”

Me: “I think there’s roadworks.”

Mum: “Can’t you just go around there?”

Me: “No.”

Mum: “Of course you can! We’ll be there in no time.”

Me: “By mounting the pavement?”

Mum: “What’s stopping you?”

Me: “The law?”

Mum: *dejected* “Oh…”

(When we got home my dad saw me and burst out laughing.)

Me: “Why was she acting like that?”

Dad: “That’s what she does. She never bothered when you were in the car, because you were young.”

Me: “You aren’t driving her anymore, are you?”

Dad: “The torch has been passed my son. It is yours to bear.”

(He then headed into the kitchen and spent the rest of the night cackling every time he saw me.)
