Atomic Clocks: Not Great, Not Terrible

, , , , , , , | Working | June 6, 2023

I’ve worked in IT for around thirty years now. About twenty years ago, we synchronized our network servers with an atomic clock, so we’re always pretty accurate — not that it matters much, but it’s a neat gimmick.

The head of the IT department sent out an email to all the other departments.

Head Of IT: “Just a fun note: over the weekend we have synchronized our servers with the atomic clock in Colorado so you can be on time for [list of occasions].”

This was a mistake, as within minutes, dozens of emails started coming in.

Email #1: “Is there a risk of radiation poisoning due to my computers interacting with the atomic clock?”

Email #2: “Should I wear special gloves if the computer is atomic now?”

Email #3: “If my computer is atomic powered, why does the battery still die so soon?”

After this, it was made department policy to never send out unneeded technical update announcements ever again.
