Arrogance Takes A Permanent Vacation

| Working | April 9, 2016

(I’m the supervisor in my department. Thanks to an arrangement one of my coworkers made with the manager, he gets to do a handful of my supervisor duties.  Normally, I’d be grateful for the help, but he’ll tell anyone who’ll listen that he’s the real brains of the department, and that he hopes I get fired for my ‘incompetence’ and that he’ll get promoted to my position. This happens when I’m about to go off on vacation, and I’m training him to fill in for me.)

Coworker: “Aw, man. This is so much work! Why do I have to do this?”

Me: “You have to do this because this is your chance.”

Coworker: “My chance for what?”

Me: “Well, you’re always telling people how you’re better at my job and that you want my position, so this is your chance! This is your opportunity to step up and prove it! If you prove yourself, you WILL get my position. And then you can do all this work every day, all the time.”

(My coworker went silent after that. But, when I got back from vacation, he’d stopped telling everyone that he was better than me.)
