An Ugly Side Of Society Has Been Unmasked, Part 38
This happened during the 2020 pandemic when I was still working in retail. Mask mandates had already been firmly in place for months at this point, and the only reason our store was open at all was because we were considered ‘essential’. Stores also had to limit how many people were allowed inside at the same time. A woman comes in, her mask hanging loosely around her neck, not covering anything.
Me: “Ma’am, please put on your mask.”
Customer: “Huh? Do I have to?”
Me: “Yes. There’s a mask mandate, and not only can you get fined for not wearing one, but us as well if we don’t enforce it. So please put on your mask or I’ll have to ask you to leave.”
Customer: *Looks around.* “But why? There’s not a single other person here.”
I am completely out of patience because this isn’t the first time today, nor even the first time in the past ten minutes, I had this discussion. Thankfully, my boss is very lenient on how we talk to idiot customers.
Me: “Ma’am, I know you barely consider us retail employees as human beings, but we do count as people too. So, you can either put on your mask now – and I will not ask again – or I can direct you back to the door you just came in through. Which will it be?”
She did finally put on her mask – then I kicked her out anyway, not even a minute later, when she took the mask off again the moment she assumed I wasn’t looking. Unfortunately, this was nowhere near the stupidest customer we had to deal with during those trying times.
