An Off The Clock Block, Part 3
I’m standing outside a large store with my cart of paid items, just sending a few texts on my phone. It’s a sunny day so a few people are enjoying a coffee/snack from the outdoor café just outside the store entrance, including a uniformed member of staff who are obviously on their break.
I see a customer walk up to the employee.
Customer: “Hi, I don’t mean to bother you, but I had a question…”
Employee: “You don’t mean to bother me… on my UNPAID lunch break, yet you’re doing it anyway.”
Customer: *Shocked at the bluntness, and taking a step back.* “…well, there’s no need to make me feel like an a**.”
Employee: “If I didn’t, would you have asked me your question?”
Customer: “Well… yeah.”
Employee: “Then there was a need to make you feel like an a**.” *Sips coffee.*
I saw the customer storm back into the store. Suspecting the worst, I followed them and saw them demand to complain to a manager. I stuck around to make sure the manager knew precisely what happened, earning me some killer looks from the customer, and an assurance from the manager that any employee couldn’t be written up for what they do when not on the clock.
