An Alcoholic Purchase Does Not An Alcoholic Make

As I am now done with teaching after thirty-five years, I am free to throw a few more stories into the wild. A few years ago, on a Friday during summer break, I stopped at the local bevvy (liquor store/beer, wine, and hard liquor, for those not from New England) for a twelve-pack after work at my summer job.

While I was in the checkout line, a woman came up to me and laid into me.

Woman: “If I knew you were a drinker, I would have taken my daughter out of your class! Teachers shouldn’t be drunks!”

And so on.

The ONLY thing the store sells is alcoholic beverages. She was there as a customer. The cognitive dissonance still hurts.
