About To Have A Tempura Tantrum
A group of teenagers has sat down in a booth in our sushi restaurant. They’re all giggling among themselves as I walk up to take their order, so I know they’re up to something. None of them has opened the menu book.
I start taking their order:
Teen #1: “Chicken wings!”
Cue snort laughing from the rest of them as if this was the funniest thing in the world.
Me: “Ah, the chicken karaage. Ten pieces or twenty?”
The laughing stops.
Teen #1: “Uh… what?”
Me: “The chicken karaage comes in a ten-piece or twenty-piece. Which one was it?”
Teen #1: *Deflated.* “Uh… ten.”
Me: “Awesome. What else?”
Teen #2: “Burger and fries!”
The laughter starts up again.
Me: “The teriyaki burger and potato tempura. Is that with cheese?”
The laughing stops again.
Teen #2: “Uh… what?”
Me: “Did you want the teriyaki burger with cheese?”
[Teen #3 and #4] are now furiously going through the menu.
Teen #2: “Uh… with cheese.”
Me: “Awesome!”
[Teen #3 and #4] actually order something from the menu, realizing that their attempts to order classic American fast-food staples in a sushi restaurant aren’t going to provide the belly laughs they were hoping for.
They didn’t tip (of course), but I was paid plenty in seeing their faces drop when I foiled their prank.
