A Slight Accent Of Condescension

| Learning | July 17, 2017

(A number of my friends are our schools “drama kids”, and while I am not one, I often end up helping out with plays and other drama shenanigans. My friend is working on an exam piece, where she’s playing a character from ‘A Midsummer Night’s Dream’. I have a slightly odd accent, due to a mix of my mother’s Scottish one, and my dad’s Yorkshire one.)

Friend: “Hey, [My Name], can you help me?”

Me: “Um, sure. What’s up?”

Friend: “So, I wanted to ask you to teach me how to speak ‘Yorkshire’?”

Me: “’Yorkshire’?”

Friend: “Yeah! You see, I’m playing [Character] in [Other Friend]’s acting piece and I want him to be really arrogant and dumb — so he needs to sound authentic!”

Me: “So let me get this straight; you want to copy my accent because you think it’ll make your character look arrogant and dumb?”

Friend: *oblivious* “Yup! So will you?”
