A Sad State Of Affairs
(I’m from Texas originally and my whole family still lives there, so I travel back from Pennsylvania—where I live now—to spend holidays with them. At the store, I’m buying some champagne and beer for the festivities.)
Cashier: “ID, please.”
(I hand him the perfectly legal, current Pennsylvania driver’s license. He looks startled at first, then skeptical, then just plain confused.)
Cashier: “Don’t you have any Texas ID?”
Me: “I live in Pennsylvania, so… no?”
Cashier: “I’m… going to have to see a manager about this.”
(Fortunately, a manager is just the aisle over. The cashier calls him over and asks him if he can’t take a look at this. The manager looks at the ID, looks at me, and with a certain long-suffering expression on his face, nods to the cashier before handing the ID back to me.)
Manager: “You have a nice day, ma’am.”
