A Queer Translation

| Learning | May 2, 2016

(We’re in a grade ten Spanish class. It’s a very small class with only about 10 students and our teacher is super lenient so she lets us sit wherever and joke around. I am of Spanish origin so more advanced than my class so my teacher regularly asks me to assist my fellow students. Today we’re learning about the names of items and using the words in small sentences.)

Teacher: “Okay [Classmate #1], I would like you to say ‘I want an orange.’”

Classmate: “I don’t remember the word for want.”

(‘I want’ in Spanish is ‘quiero,’ pronounced kiedo.)

Teacher: “On page 17 of your textbook it is printed.”

Classmate: “Okay… um. Oh here it is. Okay.” *using a very loud voice* “YO QUEER-O.”

(The rest of the class erupts in laughter.)

Teacher: “[My Name], perhaps you could assist [Classmate #1] with his sexuality?”
