A New Complaint To Yam-mer On About

, , , , | Right | October 4, 2020

I’m ringing up a lady with a few items, one of which is a hot food item from our deli, which is not covered by my state’s EBT/Food Stamp program. It also takes a second for the screen to update the new total after a card has been run through our system.

Customer: “It didn’t take anything off?”

Me: “It did. You now only owe $1.70.”

Customer: “For what?”

Me: “The yams. EBT doesn’t cover hot prepared food items.”

Customer: “They have no problems with that at [Competing Store].”

I know for a fact that the store she mentions has no hot deli foods, but I don’t mention that so as to not give her something else to argue about.

Me: “They’re not supposed to do that; it’s part of the EBT program’s rules. It’s the same as how you can’t go to [Fast Food Restaurant beside us] or [Other Fast Food Restaurant] and use your card there.”

Customer: “Well, that doesn’t make sense. Those hot dog buns are food and I can get them.”

Me: “Yes, but they are not hot prepared food. You can’t use your card for the hot deli items because it’s one of the rules for the program. It’s the same reason that restaurants won’t be able to accept EBT cards.”

She relented, paid for her food, and walked off in a huff.
