Consciously Aware Of Their Unconscious Bias

(The entire district is attending a seminar on unconscious bias. It’s a long program, and we are all tired and trying to focus.)

Speaker: “Bias is part of everyday life. It is how it is applied that makes it positive or negative.”

Teachers: *nodding in agreement*

Speaker: *shows us a quote about changing the world from a young Muslim girl, cue more nodding, and smiles from the crowd* “I like to show diverse and contemporary quotes. See, we can quote more than old, dead, white men.” *continues discussing bias…*

(The crowd of teachers at my table are speechless.)
