A Deposit For Damage Is Just Smoke And Mirrors… And Sheets…

I work in a hotel. I just had a couple of dudes roll up outside in a box truck. One guy came up, passed me his ID and his credit card through the night window, and asked for a smoking double. I started to set up the reservation when I noticed the card had someone else’s name on it. I went back to the window.

Me: “Do you have a different card? I can’t accept one with someone else’s name on it from you.”

Guest: “It’s my boss’s card; I use it all the time.”

Me: “I’m sorry, but it’s hotel policy that we can only accept a card from the cardholder. I could send him an authorization form to fill out to confirm that you have permission to use this card.”

Guest: “How am I supposed to do that? Can I just have him call you?”

Me: “You could have him call me and I could get his email address so I can send him the authorization form.”

Guest: “He can’t just call you and say that it’s okay?”

Me: “No, I’m sorry. I need physical, documented proof for our records.”

Guest: “This is bulls***. I use this card all the time.”

Me: “This is our policy.”

Guest: “Can I pay cash?”

Me: “Yes, but we will still need a card to cover damages.”

Guest: “What for?”

Me: “In case there is damage to the room.”

Guest: “But I’m getting a smoking room.”

Me: “Yes, but there are still things that can be damaged in the room.”

Guest: “Like what?

Me: “The sheets—”

Guest: “The room is already going to be bad; it’s going to have stains and broken stuff, anyway. Why should I have to pay a deposit?”

Me: “I think you should probably just find a different hotel, sir. Have a good night.”

And with that, I turned off the microphone and walked away. A couple of minutes later, he came back, pounding on the window, demanding my boss’s information and my name. Okay, complain to my boss that I was doing my job, please.
