A Cents-less Case

I was working at a drive-thru at a fast-food burger place that has a dollar saver menu. This lady pulls up to place her order:

Customer: “Hi, I’d like one cheeseburger, please.”

Me: “Sure thing, that’ll be $1.10.”

Customer: “Um, you’re advertising it as a dollar. If you’re charging $1.10, that’s illegal!”

Me: “That’s the price with tax.”

I know it’s annoying, but this woman spoke with a local accent. I find it unlikely this is her first time encountering the stupid American sales tax.

Customer: “That’s illegal!”

Me: “It’s annoying, but it’s not illegal.”

She makes an annoyed scoffing sound and pulls out. Ten cents is the hill she chose to die on, no harm or foul.

But then she ended up coming back an hour with a guy speaking on her car’s speakerphone.

Customer: *To me.* “I’m not ordering anything! I’m here with my attorney!” *To her attorney.* “Okay, I’m here.”

Attorney: “Okay, now just take a picture of the board and send it to me. I’ll take care of it.”

She’s insulted by the ten-cent tax on a burger, but she can afford the billable hours of a lawyer?
