French Disconnection

| Learning | January 11, 2016

(It is the first French lesson. At this time, the movie, Moulin Rouge, is showing in the theatres and one of the songs, Lady Marmalade had become very popular. Note: ‘Voulez-vous coucher avec moi ce soir’ means ‘Do you want to sleep with me tonight’.)

French Teacher: “So, does anyone know any French words?”

Classmate: *raises hand* “Yes! I do!”

French Teacher: “Okay, please tell us what you know.”

Classmate: *happily* “Voulez-vous coucher avec moi ce soir.”

French Teacher: “What?!”

Classmate: “Voulez-vous coucher avec moi ce soir.”

Teacher: *horrified* “That’s not something you want to say. Do you even know what it means?”

Classmate: “No? But it’s French!”

(One of my classmates actually knew the meaning, so he explained it to Classmate quietly. She was, not surprisingly, shocked to hear that she had inadvertently propositioned the French teacher, who was more than twice her age.)
