The Penny Dropped Later Than The Ball

| Learning | January 12, 2015

(I am in a sophomore chemistry class. My class tends to go off on tangents occasionally. One day, we get this gem.)

Teacher: “Hey, guys, you know those math questions that use sports analogies to talk about velocity and rate? I mean, half of you are girls, surely you can relate to the ones with a ball dropping through the air?”

(Several female students agree that, yes, these questions are plenty relatable.)

Teacher: “This is ridiculous! They’re saying that questions like that should be replaced because girls aren’t interested in sports and don’t know anything about balls dropping!”

(There was a moment of frozen silence as we processed what she said, and then the entire class burst out laughing. The teacher face-palmed, but she was laughing, too.)
