Will Be Like This For ‘An Hour’

| Friendly | July 12, 2016

(My older coworkers are discussing a small wildlife park near our town, which has some larger animals such as wolves or deer, but also a lot of petting zoo areas and play spaces for kids.)

Coworker #1: “Have you taken your kids there before? I don’t know if it’s any good, and I don’t wanna drive all the way just to disappoint my kids.”

Coworker #2: “It’s a really nice place. Pretty sure your children would have a great day.”

Me: “If it’s still as awesome as it was when I was young. You should definitely go. I have great memories of the place.”

Coworker #1: “Wait, you went there as a child? Aren’t you from [Town]? Was it a school trip?”

Me: “No, my mum just took the family there about once a month, I think. It was a regular weekend day-trip. My brother and I loved it.”

Coworker #1: “But that’s a one hour trip from [Town]! Your mum did this monthly?”

Me: “Maybe not EVERY month, but very often. It was a nice day out. My brother and I still talk about it sometimes.”

Coworker #2: “Your mum was a single mum, right? Did she even have the time to drive two kids around for two hours there and back, just so you could play? Does [Town] not have local play areas?”

Me: “Of course we played in [Town] as well! But the wildlife park was just a special treat. I mean, there’s lots of different activities for kids in this area, I think my mum pretty much took us to all of them on weekends or holidays or so.”

Coworker #2: “But it’s still a one hour drive!”

Coworker #1: “Maybe you went twice and now you’re just remembering it a bit different.”

(They kept arguing about this while I just gave up. They simply couldn’t believe that a single mother would drive ONE HOUR with two children ‘just to entertain them.’)
