A Shower Of Misunderstanding

(My mother relates a conversation to me that happened between her and her mother in the 1950s. My grandmother has just come back from visiting a friend.)

Grandmother: “Not going back there again. I can’t believe that she is so dirty!”

Mother: “What do you mean, dirty?”

Grandmother: “She told me she hadn’t taken a bath in over two years”

Mother: “What?”

Grandmother: “Yes, she has one of those stand-up shower things that she uses daily. She hasn’t taken a good weekly sit-down bath for two years!”
