Unfiltered Story #18475

This is short, but it’s the first time something like this happened to me and I’m still in shock. I’m a student, and due to my school moving, I have to move soon, too. Between the rent for my current room and the deposit for the new one, I either had €1 or €340 on my bank account, depending on when the bank would try to pay my rent. I figured it was worth a try, because when I opened the banking app, I saw it was still at €340, even though it was supposed to have been paid already.

I had nothing to eat in the house and I wanted to buy a sandwich, so I went to the baker.

Me: Good afternoon, could I have a [sandwich] please? But my bank is acting weird so I would like to try to pay first, so that if it doesn’t go through, you haven’t made the sandwich for nothing.

Baker: Yeah, I guess… (She was not actually grumpy, more disinterested)

I tried, and it didn’t go through. I packed my stuff and started to walk away, with no possibility for lunch except for dry bread, when suddenly…

Random guy in the bakery: Hey, how much is it?

Baker: €5.50.

Random guy: I’ll pay for it.

Me: Really? Are you sure? I don’t want to be a leech, or a burden, or…

Random guy (interrupting me): No, no, please take it, I’ve been in your situation often enough and now that I’m on the other end I’d love to help you out.

I thanked him profusely, time and time again, until my sandwich was done, and he kept saying it was nothing. I just realised there was something I could’ve done to thank him, though, and now I feel like an idiot for not thinking of it sooner. When you buy a long baguette in this bakery (which I did), you get a free soda with it, and I could’ve asked him what he wanted and given it to him, but I didn’t think about it at the time. I don’t deserve his incredible kindness. :(
