Unfiltered Story #97619

I’m working near the checkout when a see a young girl around 7 picking all the coins out of each register’s take-a-penny-leave-a-penny dish. I catch up to her at the last register.
Me: What are you doing?
Child: I’m getting all the coins?
Me: How come?
Child: I’m going to buy a piece of candy with them.
Me: Oh, but these are our penny dishes and if you take the coins from them it’s stealing.
Child: Why?
Me: Because they’re not yours. If you had a candy that cost a dollar and two cents but you only had a dollar /then/ you could use the penny dish so you would have enough. We like to keep some pennies in all of them so we can share just in case someone needs one.
Child: Oh! That’s a good idea!
She let me put all the pennies she’d collected back and went back to her mom and siblings checking out.
