(I work at an inner city public library, where we usually have both nice and
odd patrons. During my shift the library’s computer lab, I get a request
from a quiet, older man.)
Me: Yes sir, can I help you today?
Man: *looks at me vacantly* Do you have a phone I can use?
Me: No sir, I’m sorry. We don’t have a public phone. But can I call for a
ride for you?
Man: *Another vacant stare* No, I just wanted to make a call to my electric
company.
Me: …I’m sorry, sir.
