(I get a phone call from a guest room at about 8:30pm)

Me: “Guest services [my name] speaking, how may I help you?”

Caller: “Hi, I hate to be a bother, but the guy next door is playing his trumpet and it’s really loud!”

Me: “I’m sorry, did you say trumpet?”

Caller: “Yes, trumpet.”

Me: “Okay I’ll go and have a look and see whats going on.”

[I head up to the floor and, sure enough, I can hear a trumpet playing down the corridor. I knock on the door and a young man answers.]

Me: “Hello sir I’m [my name] the hotel manager. I’ve had some complaints about the noise coming from this room.”

Guest: “You mean my trumpet?”

Me: “Yes.”

Guest: “You want me to stop?”

[I nod in the affirmative]

Guest: “Can I put the mute on?”

[I shake my head]

Guest: “Is there anywhere I can practise?”

Me: ” I’m afraid not sir.”

Guest: [looking quite forlorn] “Okay”

[he closes the door softly and I don’t hear any more complaints for the rest of the night]
