Unfiltered Story #56950

Unfiltered | September 19, 2016

(I’m Scottish, currently staying in a not particularly touristy area of Spain with one of my good friends. She is Spanish, but fluent in English. Unlike her, my Spanish is terrible, so she generally ends up doing the talking. We’re at the pool one afternoon, and part of their ticketing process is to take note of your name. This exchange was translated to me after the fact.)

Pool Worker: “And what’s your name?”

Friend: “[Her Name]. And hers is [My (Very Scottish) Name].”

Pool Worker: “What?”

Friend: “[My Name]. She’s English (Inglés).”

Pool Worker: *begins to write name*

Friend: “No, no. Sorry, she’s English, her name isn’t Andrea -”

Pool Worker: “Oh I know. That’s why. I won’t be able to spell the name. She’s Andrea now. Andrea Lopez.”

(My friend didn’t complain, because the name register wasn’t anything serious, just a private record. We paid and walked away. She was in the middle of explaining what happened, to my amusement, when we heard a shout.)

Pool Worker: “I’ll be weighing the water of the pool later, /Andrea/! I’ll know if you steal any! Water is expensive in Spain, not like England!”

(The language barrier can be awkward at times but in others it’s just downright hilarious. This guy made my day!)
