My mom, my brother, and I are sitting in the living room watching Chinese martial arts movies on TV.

Mom: “These movies alway have Chinese people being quarrelsome. They need to fight to practice their kung fu. No fight, no kung fu.”

A short while afterward, still watching TV, my brother remembers that one of our cats hadn’t been shooed in for the night. This cat tends to be more on the evasive side when it comes to getting him in the house.

Brother: Did you let the cat in?

Me: No. Why don’t you do it? You know how difficult it can be.

Brother: *jokingly* You’re difficult.

Me. *faking being offended* You wanna fight?

Mom: Show him your kung fu.
