(we are talking about potentially giving my cousin a place to live. My sister, however, is objected to the idea.)
Sister: …But how long will it take until she can support herself?
Mom: As long as possible.
Sister: But that will take awhile. you’re essentially adding someone to the family – do you know how long it will take before they can move out?
(I then finally speak up, and gesture over to my sister’s boyfriend of ten years who has lived with her for roughly six.)
Me: Yeah. we’ve been trying to get rid of this one for ten years.
(Everyone at the table just erupts in laughter – even my sister’s boyfriend.)
