Unfiltered Story #418767
I was at the local big supermarket today with my mom. Did I want to go, ehhh. But that’s not relevant what is, is that because it’s a Thursday and the whole country just got off a big two day holiday and shabbat is tomorrow the supermarket is super busy.
Being my little autistic opossum self I immediately put on noise canceling headphones and go nonverbal. For me I can sometimes choose to go nonverbal, it helps me save the autism battery and prevents meltdowns.
And so we venture the supermarket and everything is good and I get goldfish crackers so really good. But then we get to the checkout.
My mom is on one end bagging and I’m on the other putting the groceries on the belt when a man with a full cart gets behind me and after a few moments starts talking to me and by talking I mean yelling
Rude Man: Lady! Hey Lady! Can I Have You’re Cart Mines Weird! Hey Lady I’m talking to you!
Deciding to be a responsible person this time, I ignore him and continue putting stuff on the belt, I see him say something but by this point I’m completely ignoring him. It’s not until I’m in the car with my mom she tells me what fully happened at the checkout
Rude Man: Hey Why Is She Ignoring Me Hu?!
Mom: (meaning to say currently non verbal but instead saying) Oh she can’t speak.
Apperntly both the man and the checkout lady froze and interpreted this as me being not only mute but also deaf, because I ignored him.
According to my mom they were silent for the rest of the checkout and and both looked super nervous.
I personally found this hilarious and cackled with joy in the car. Is it weird that they thought someone with noise canceling headphones was deaf? Yes. Super rude that they assumed someone mute has to be deaf? Fuck ya, but I like to think he learned to not be so rude.
