Unfiltered Story #414476

We have a regular customer who nearly always orders the same thing, so everyone knows who she is. One day I am on the till when she comes to order around 1pm.

Regular: I’ll have [Usual Drink], [Usual Food #1] and [Usual Food #2] to eat in, and a portion of toast with butter to take away.

This isn’t an uncommon request, some people don’t want to have to come back to pay later so they order everything at once.

Me: No problem, I’ll pop that through for you. Just let us know when you’re about to leave and we can get that toast sorted for you.

Regular: That’s OK, just bring it out with the rest.

Me: Oh, so is everything take away?

Regular: No, just the toast. I like cold toast. I’ll take it home and probably won’t even eat it until 9 this evening.

Me: …..

I put the order through as requested, she goes to sit down, and I go into the kitchen to confirm they understand.

Colleague: She wants toast to take away, but she’s not going to eat it for eight hours?!

Me: Yep…..

Colleague: What? Ewww!

We make the order as requested, [Regular] stays in the cafe with her cold toast for an hour or so before leaving, and when my colleagues hear the story, they all have the same reaction – “What? Ewww!”. I know everyone has their own tastes when it comes to food, but cold and soggy toast after 8 hours is certainly a new one! “Soggy toast” became the injoke for the day!
