This story (https://notalwaysright.com/my-boss-will-not-be-the-death-of-me/347180/) reminds me of a similar experience I had working at a pizza restaurant. This restaurant was located in a touristy area, and did most of it’s business in the summer. It’s the summer of 2005, and I’ve been informed that my grandfather is in the hospital, and will likely be gone by the end of the week. I inform my boss (store owner) of the situation, and that I will likely need to take a few days off soon, with very little notice. Sure enough, a little over a week later, I get the call, and immediately start looking for a flight. Once I know my schedule, I call the restaurant to let them know when I will be gone, and speak with the manager.
Manager: No. Absolutely not. This is our busiest time of year, and we cannot have anyone out for any reason. If you are not here on your usual shifts, don’t bother coming back in.
He slams the phone down before I can say anything. I take a few deep breaths, and call the restaurant again, this time I ask to speak with my boss. I explain that my grandfather has passed, and what happened when I spoke with the manager. My boss is silent for what seems like a short eternity. Finally, he speaks.
Boss: Go to the funeral. Don’t worry about manager or your job.
I heard from a co-worker that my boss called the manager into his office and made it very clearly known how wrong the manager’s actions were. I attended the funeral, and kept my job. The manager barely spoke to me or made eye contact for several months afterwards.
