Unfiltered Story #389250
The first dog I had growing up was a beautiful female German Shepard.
She was an amazing dog. As infants when we needed a nap all my mom had to do was say “nap time Jenny” and she would run to the couch and jump up curling into a C with the open part against the back of the couch. Mom would put us there to sleep and she wouldn’t move. When we started to wake she would give a soft quiet “woof” to let my mom know we were waking repeating if needed.
She was very well trained and disciplined.
One summer we had a week long garage sale. It only took Jenny a couple of vehicles to figure out what to do. Note we lived on a farm so not as busy of city garage sales. As soon as a car pulled into the lane she started barking and would run to a large kennel my dad had built onto the side of the house. She would sit just on the inside of the door and continued barking until one of my parents came outside. They walked out said “Thank you Jenny” and closed the door and locked it. My parents did this because so many people are uncomfortable with large dogs. But the moment they said thank you she stopped barking she just sat quietly until my parents let her out again.
This garage sale my mom swears she had more people ask to buy her than people buying something. One woman even offered $500. This was back in the 1990’s and Jenny wasn’t a young dog. Some people honestly showed up just to see her because someone told them of the amazing dog we had.
A lot of people thought she would be an amazing guard dog. My dad honestly said that her biggest issue she would let everyone and anyone in the house. With that thankfully most weren’t as interested. My dad just neglected to let them know she won’t let anyone leave without permission. She was trained to let everyone in but no one left without my parents’ say so.
When us girls got older my parents would sigh and say too bad Jenny isn’t around (she died early 2000s at very old age). They would know if he visited because he wouldn’t be allowed to leave!
