Our outdoor band concert building burned to the extent that it was razed and a new one built. The city decided to hold a dedication ceremony. A former presidential press secretary grew up in our town and he was invited to speak at the ceremony.
Somehow, because of all the hoopla about the press secretary coming, a former federal prison convict who had robbed one of our banks while he was stationed in the army nearby and had become a successful businessman wanted to attend the ceremony. He claimed that his getting caught robbing our bank eventually brought about his reformation and wanted to repay our town for his life’s turn around.
After the speeches at the ceremony the former convict walked out into the crowd and took handsful of cash, $5s, $10s and $20 out of a bag his assistance was holding and threw them into the air in the crowd.
People were shoving others out of the way grabbing money. Some were crawling on the ground picking up the bills.
Townsman: What a generous thing this man did with his money.
Me: You idiot. Don’t you see what he really did. He’s been bitter ever since, probably, and paid us back by throwing money in the air and watching our towns people crawl for it. I doubt he threw more than $500 to $700 into the air, which was probably nothing to him.
