Unfiltered Story #366517
I used to have a side job as a student. Our boss had little sense of work ethics, labor laws or whatsoever. In fact, deep down, he only cared about getting what he wants, in a way which seems almost childlike. One of our coworkers showed her contract to a lawyer: it turned out that most of it wasn’t legally valid (and therefore not legally binding either).
I could have known because of the first two clauses in my own contract: the first one claimed I had a 3 hour contract, because working hours were flexible but 0 hour contracts were too expensive. Legally this meant I had to work 3 hours at least a week: all other hours (because there was always more than 3) were in fact overtime.
Although this made sense, the second clause immediately contradicted the first by stating: ‘No work, no pay.’ So apparently I had a 3 hour contract, but if they didn’t provide me with any work (which usually happened for months during winter) we wouldn’t get anything, despite the contract claiming they had to provide us with at least 3 hours of work a week.
Another coworker showed the contract to a law student he knew. He told us the contract made the student laugh out loudly. I never heard what the funny bit was, but apparently the student thought it was so funny that he copied it and put it up in his fraternity so that everyone could have a laugh. I’m very glad to be out of that place.
