Family friends had moved away many years ago, contact grew very intermittent, mainly a phone call at Christmas or when tragedy strikes. Mum is just getting off the phone when I visit her one day.

Mum “(Family Friend) just called me”

Me “Oh, is anything wrong?”

Mum “No, she called me to say that (Daughter my age) just went out on a date with a Doctor and that she’s sure it’s very serious”.

*My friend had a very bad first relationship that left her with a baby, an abusive ex and had not dated for 20 years. She visited me about a month later.

Me “So what’s this about a date with Doctor?”

Friend “Oh no, she didn’t call you too did she? Mum was so excited she called everyone she knows. He’s a friend from work, who happens to be a Doctor, he picked me up to go to a party that we were both going to. He is handsome but also very gay, not that Mum will listen she’s pretty much got us married over one date”.
