Unfiltered Story #363548

I was in a different State than the one I live in, and my partner thought I would have fun taking a detour from our planned trip to visit a small independent brewery and farm. They were right of course, I’m a bit of a beer nerd, and an advocate for local consumption, so this was a lot of fun.

We decided to take the guided tour of course, and during the tour there were some great questions asked.
Guy#1- after the guide just said they only use hops grown on the farm, and then names all the varieties they grow, including two German varieties: Do you ever use German hops? I really like beers made with Saaz hops (not German, and not one the guide mentioned).
Guy #2 – after the guide enthusiastically talks about the styles of beer brewed without hops, and shows some of the plants they grow to use in these styles: But if you don’t use hops where how does it get the alcohol? (FYI anyone who doesn’t know, the alcohol comes from fermenting sugars in the grain… not the hops)

But the dumb question my partner found the funniest was asked while we were being shown the cool-ship, which is a way of rapidly cooling the wort (unfermented beer), while simultaneously exposing it to wild yeasts that will begin the fermentation process and give it a funky farmhouse kinda flavor.
Guide: We really love the unique flavors and complexity offered by our native wild yeasts that are introduced to the wort here.
Me: Where did you say your yeast is from?
Guide: *staring in customer service*
Me: Yep, I just asked that, sorry I’m dumb.
Guide: But you’re paying, so I’ll allow it.
Partner: *snort*

The rest of the trip, anything that was clearly homegrown or locally produced my partner would look at me and say, “did you want to ask where this was from hun?”
