My mom, a nurse, worked the night shift. This particular night was very quiet; all the patients were resting comfortably and there are no emergencies. The on-call doctor, Dr. Hu, had stepped away for a bit when another doctor passed by. My mom was the only person at the nurses’ station.

Doctor: Who’s on call tonight?

Mom, trying not to smile: Yes.

Doctor, confused: No, who is the doctor on call tonight?

Mom: Yes.

Doctor, looking a bit desperate: What?

Mom, laughing: I’m sorry, but the name of the doctor on call tonight is Hu. When you asked ‘Who’s on call?’ I had to joke a bit.”

Doctor, also laughing: I would have done the same thing!
